Villarreal agree to sell Valero to Fiorentina

BorjaValero
Fiorentina have agreed to sign Villarreal's midfielder Borja Valero, the two clubs said on Wednesday.
Valero, 27, would shortly travel to Italy for a medical and to tie up the details of the move, Villarreal, who were relegated from La Liga last season, said on their website.
A club spokesman declined to confirm media reports that the deal was worth seven million euros.
An attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, Valero came through Real Madrid's youth academy before joining Real Mallorca and later had a stint at English club West Bromwich Albion. He has made one appearance for Spain.
Fiorentina, which is owned by the Della Valle family of Tod's shoemaking fame, finished 13th in Serie A last term.

Court rejects Conte's plea bargain for fixing

Conte Juventus2862
Juventus coach Antonio Conte's plea bargain offer of a three-month ban for match-fixing was rejected by an Italian football federation (FIGC) tribunal on Wednesday, forcing him to propose a longer ban or face a full sporting trial.
Siena will start the Serie A season with a six-point deduction after their plea bargain was accepted at the second attempt by the FIGC's tribunal over the same case. They must also a pay a 100,000 euros fine.
Promoted Torino were docked one point in Serie A while Varese were deducted one point in Serie B as the tribunal handed out further punishments in the latest scandal to hit Italian football.
Conte, who led Juventus to the Serie A title last season, is accused of failing to report match-fixing in two games in the 2010/11 season when he was coach of Siena, then in Serie B.
Conte, who originally denied all the allegations, changed strategy in recent weeks and tried to reach a deal with federation prosecutor Stefano Palazzi under which he would accept a three-month ban and avoid going to court.
However, the tribunal ruled after a hearing on Wednesday that the proposal agreed with Palazzi, which would have allowed Conte to return to Juventus's bench in November, was not acceptable.
Juventus reacted angrily to the decision.
"Juventus today is imposing a media silence," read a statement on the club's website.
"Tomorrow morning, the situation will be evaluated regarding the events of today which are to be considering, whatever the outcome of this matter, to be a serious act against the good repute of all those involved: professionals, the manager, members and club."
The matches involved in the charges were between Novara and Siena in May 2011, which finished 2-2, and Albinoleffe and Siena in the same month which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Siena.
In total, 13 clubs and 45 players and training staff are facing disciplinary charges over the match-fixing allegations.
The "Calcioscommesse" scandal echoes earlier match-fixing cases which tarnished Italian football in the 1980s and before the 2006 World Cup.
Prosecutors believe an international gambling ring paid players to throw matches in the latest scandal. Dozens of current and former players in teams ranging from the Serie A top division down to the lower leagues may have been involved, according to investigators.

Berlusconi still open to Kaka capture

Kaka Milan Wave
AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi, under pressure from fans after selling two top players, has not ruled out bringing Real Madrid's Brazilian playmaker Kaka back to the club after three largely disappointing seasons in Spain.
"Kaka has remained in our hearts because of the player and the man that he is," Berlusconi was quoted as saying on Milan's website on Tuesday.
"I don't rule out a hypothesis of that sort but it depends on the situation," the former Italian prime minister said.
Berlusconi's daughter Barbara, who oversees "special projects" at the Serie A club, and Milan vice president Adriano Galliani were "splendidly situated at their workdesks", he added cryptically.
The sales of top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic and classy defender Thiago Silva to Paris Saint-Germain have angered Milan fans but Berlusconi said the club had to balance the books and would not be making any extravagant buys in the coming years.
Kaka, currently on a pre-season tour with Real in the United States, has shown flashes of brilliance since moving to La Liga for around 65 million euros.
However, the 30-year-old has been sidelined several times by injury and mainly played second fiddle to German international Mesut Ozil last season.
Real coach Jose Mourinho said on Friday Kaka's future was still up in the air but that he would be delighted if he stayed.
The 2007 World Player of the year has been linked in media reports with a move to cash-rich PSG, the Ligue 1 club coached by his former boss at Milan Carlo Ancelotti, as well as a loan deal back to Milan and a move to MLS side New York Red Bulls.

Roma seal deal for forward Destro

MattiaDestro
AS Roma have completed the signing of Siena striker Mattia Destro, one of the most sought-after players in Serie A.
Juventus, AC Milan and former owners Inter Milan were among the clubs courting the 21-year-old, who netted 12 league goals for Siena last term and just missed out on a berth in Italy's Euro 2012 squad.
Underachievers Roma, who have also recruited American Michael Bradley and Brazilian Dodo for new coach Zdenek Zeman over the close-season, said in a statement on Monday that they had signed Destro in a complicated deal involving previous co-owners Genoa.

Galliani fearful of finances over Kaka deal

kaka rm286
AC Milan fear that financial difficulties could scupper a move for Kaka.
The Real Madrid midfielder has struggled for form and fitness following his big-money switch to Santiago Bernabeu in 2009.
Kaka has been told he is allowed to leave the La Liga champions, provided potential suitors meet the reported £40 million asking price.
The midfielder's agent has revealed that talks over a potential return had taken place.
However, club vice president Adriano Galliani believes that any transfer could be too expensive, with tax laws in Spain giving players lucrative contracts.
"It is very difficult," Galliani told Sky Italia. "The negotiations are all to be done. There are a thousand difficulties that could well make it impossible.
"As always, the problem is money. Milan cannot afford some wages, especially as in Spain they have a different fiscal structure.
"The law there has changed for future wages but the contracts that were already signed are still valid under the old tax code."

Taiwo set for summer move from Milan

taiwo qpr286
Taye Taiwo could be set for a return to France after being frozen out at AC Milan.
The Nigeria international arrived at San Siro from Marseille last year, but has made just eight first-team appearances in all competitions.
Taiwo spent the second half of last season on loan at Queens Park Rangers and had been linked with a permanent move to Loftus Road.
However, the 27-year-old could be set to return to Marseille, where he spent six years between 2005-11.
"I have a contract with Milan unless they want to let me go for free," he told Sky Sports. "I am relaxed.
"Knowing the qualities I have there will be many teams interested in me. I never had the chance to show what I am capable of doing for a great time but that is life."

Pazzini and Cesar omitted from Inter squad

cesar inter286
Inter Milan duo Julio Cesar and Giampaolo Pazzini have been omitted from the Serie A side's Europa League squad, making their exits from the 2010 European champions all but certain.
Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar knew his time was up when Inter signed Udinese's Samir Handanovic, while striker Pazzini has long been linked in the media with a move away.
As well as releasing the Europa League squad on Friday, Inter unveiled new midfield signing Gabi Mudingayi from Bologna.

Fiorentina pounce for playmaker Fernandez

fernandez fiorentina286
Fiorentina have signed Chile international Matias Fernandez from Sporting, the Lisbon club said in a statement on Friday.
Fernandez, a technically-gifted midfielder who is also a free-kick specialist, was a regular starter at Sporting since signing from Villarreal in 2009.
Sporting, struggling financially, did not disclose the fee that Fiorentina paid for the 26-year-old's transfer.

Inzaghi retires to coach Milan youth

Inzaghi Milan286
Filippo Inzaghi announced his retirement from football on Tuesday, and said he would be joining the AC Milan youth coaching staff.
"My time with Milan finished in the best possible way, with a goal in the final game, so it was all perfect," Inzaghi, 38, told Italian media.
"Now I begin another dream, which is to be a coach and hopefully win the Champions League."
Inzaghi, who scored 156 Serie A goals in 370 games, added: "I couldn't go to play elsewhere, as I could not just leave Milan. Today I received a proposal from England, but I can't leave Milan.
"I signed a two-year contract and will coach the youth team, then I hope one day to lead the senior squad too."

Milan fans react angrily to big name sales

Ibrahimovic PSG28621
Thiago Silva's comments about not wanting to leave AC Milan have further angered fans who have demanded to know if owner Silvio Berlusconi plans to reinvest after some high profile sales.
The departures of stylish Brazil defender Thiago Silva and leading striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to big-spending Paris Saint-Germain have shocked Milan supporters, whose side narrowly lost their Serie A title to rivals Juventus in May.
Rather than strengthen for the new season in August, the seven-times European champions have arguably let their two best players go while media reports say forward Robinho and Antonio Cassano could also depart.
"The club sell their best players and have no project for the future," read one poster on a Milan fan message board while other comments were more vitriolic towards former Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi.
"Berlusconi doesn't respect us, he should leave the club."
Milan, who have been trying to cut costs for several years and released several older players in May, have pointed out that they have signed a number of midfielders such as Fiorentina's Italy international Riccardo Montolivo during the close season.
That has not placated angry fans, who knew the truth about the sales even before Thiago Silva's comments in a news conference for the Brazil Olympic team in London on Thursday.
"My transfer to Paris was 100 percent not my decision," he said.
"I want to make clear that it was not my fault and I say sorry to Milan fans. My family and I did not want to leave Milan."
A replacement for Sweden's Ibrahimovic, Milan's top scorer in the last two seasons, looks a priority for the Rossoneri.
However, reports linking them with the likes of Manchester City's Edin Dzeko, Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov and Liverpool's Andy Carroll have not gone down well with fans who feel they are not in the same class as Ibrahimovic.

Galliani: Serie A is no longer attractive option

Galliani Milan
AC Milan chief Adriano Galliani has admitted that Serie A no longer has the star appeal it possessed in the past.
The Rossoneri recently sold prized assets Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva to Paris Saint-Germain in order to address their financial worries.
Ibrahimovic's agent Mino Raiola has claimed that the game's top players will no longer want to ply their trade in Italy.
The Swede's representative believes it is time Italian sides change their mentality, an opinion Galliani supports.
"I agree with Mino Raiola, who says that top players are no longer coming to Italy," he said.
"The top players no longer come, but we can form a team. We see they are not arriving, but we will see what we can do."

Leandro agent confirms meet with Milan

Leandro Inter2861
The agent of Leandro Damiao has met with AC Milan regarding a potential move to San Siro for the Internacional striker.
The Brazil star has been linked with a big-money move to Europe, after netting 70 goals in just 115 appearances.
Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan have also reportedly expressed an interest in the 22-year-old, who is expected to compete for the national side during this summer’s Olympic games.
Milan are keen to secure a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who completed his switch to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
And Leandro's agent, Vinicius Prates, has revealed he met with members of the Rossoneri board.
He told Terra: "I met Milan board members just to know them.
"It was the first contact. Let's see if it develops within the next few days."

Roma recruit USA midfielder Bradley

MichaelBradley
AS Roma have signed American midfielder Michael Bradley, the Serie A side said in a statement on Sunday.
Reports in Italy suggest the U.S. international has signed for a fee of 3.75 million euros from Chievo.
Bradley has penned a contract that will keep him at the Stadio Olimpico until June 2016.
He has joined up with new Roma manager Zdenek Zeman and his side at their Brunico pre-season training camp.

Conte appears before match-fixing investigation

Conte4
Juventus manager Antonio Conte appeared before Italian football federation prosecutors on Friday to answer questions about match-fixing that took place while he was in charge of Siena.
Conte spent three hours 40 minutes answering questions about allegations of sporting fraud during his time at the then-Serie B club Siena in 2011, brought by former player Filippo Carobbio.
Carobbio claimed that he knew that one game at least between Siena and Novara in April last year was rigged.
"There isn't much to say, finally the day arrived where I could tell the truth in a calm environment," Conte told reporters after leaving court.
"I restate my contentment at being able to tell my side of the story, this evening I'm returning to Valle D'Aosta [the base of Juventus' pre-season training camp] to do what I do best, win and be a coach."
Siena have already been fined 50,000 euros in the latest Italian match-fixing scandal.

AIK cancel Milan friendly over Ibra doubts

Ibrahimovic Dejected
Swedish club AIK have cancelled plans for an August friendly against AC Milan in Stockholm because the Italians cannot guarantee that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will still be playing for them, AIK said in a statement.
The Sweden captain is rumoured to be on his way to Paris Saint Germain after Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi told reporters on Thursday that he had sold Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva to the French club.
The two players are said to be negotiating personal terms.
AIK said they had planned the friendly at the Rasunda stadium on August 12.
"Unfortunately, a number of external circumstances meant that we took a joint decision not to stage the match this time," said AIK managing director Thomas Edselius.
"If we cannot guarantee Zlatan's participation there is a risk that many would be disappointed," added Mimi Nordling-Petterson, spokesperson for event managers Tailor Events who were to organise the game.

Milan agree to sell Ibra and Silva to PSG

Ibrahimovic Silva286
AC Milan have agreed to sell striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and midfielder Thiago Silva to Paris Saint-Germain, Italian media quoted club owner Silvio Berlusconi as saying on Thursday.
"Yes, I have sold Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva to PSG. We'll save 150 million euros in two years," he was quoted as saying, according to the website of Gazzetta dello Sport.
It said the final details of the sale had not been agreed but the two players would be sold for around 65 million euros.
Milan, who lost their Serie A title to Juventus in May, have already sold several older players including Gennaro Gattuso, Filippo Inzaghi, Gianluca Zambrotta and Mark van Bommel.

Sneijder agent rejects Anzhi transfer talk

Sneijder Inter2861
The agent of Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder has dismissed rumours linking his client with a move to Anzhi Makhachkala.
Reports emanating from Russia had suggested that the big-spending Eastern European giants were close to agreeing a move for the Dutchman.
However Sneijder’s agent, Soren Lerby, has insisted that there is no truth in the reports.
"There is no truth in those reports, they are just rumours," Lerby told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"There is nothing between Anzhi and Wesley."
The two teams have a history in the transfer market after Inter sold Samuel Eto’o to Anzhi for £18.4 million.

De Laurentiis: Messi to Napoli is the dream

Messi Barce286
Napoli president Auerlio De Laurentiis has revealed it is his dream to see Lionel Messi play for the Serie A side.
The charismatic supremo is keen to see the Naples side strengthen their front-line this summer following the departure of Ezequiel Lavezzi to Paris Saint-Germain.
De Laurentiis has not always spoken fondly of the Barcelona forward, branding him a ‘cretin’ following Argentina’s disappointing 2011 Copa America campaign.
However, the 63-year-old appears to have changed his mind, admitting he would love to see the 25-year-old turn out at Stadio San Paolo.
"My dream is [Lionel] Messi," he told Gazzetta dello Sport. "He doesn't even have a tattoo. He's a footballing dream, and is very cinematic."
De Laurentiis confirmed he is looking for Napoli to secure a third successive top-five finish in the upcoming Serie A campaign.
"I said this last year and will repeat it: we must finish in the top five in the league," he continued.
"The problem is that the quality of our football was so high that it was hard to win against a less noble team.
"I don't have a particular goal, we will try to do our best on every front."

Italian Super Cup to be staged in Beijing

BirdsNest Beijing2861
The Italian Super Cup between league champions Juventus and Italian Cup winners Napoli will be played at the Beijing National Stadium on August 11, a Serie A statement said on Monday.
It will be the third time the Super Cup has been played at the Bird's Nest since 2009 and the fifth time on foreign soil, after taking place in the United States in 1993 and 2003.

Forlan to leave Inter for Internacional

Forlan Inter1
Uruguay's Diego Forlan will join Brazilian club Internacional on Saturday, a day after Inter Milan terminated the striker's contract.
"Diego Forlan will arrive in Porto Alegre on Saturday," his new club said in a statement on Friday. "The player will be unveiled tomorrow."
Former Manchester United player Forlan joined Inter from Atletico Madrid a year ago and scored only two goals in 22 appearances for the Italian club.
The Serie A team, who finished sixth last season and failed to qualify for the Champions League, are set to sign Palermo defender Matias Silvestre on loan and Udinese goalkeeper Samir Handanovic on a permanent deal.

Messi targets titles over goals in Vilanova era

Messi Barcelona28631
Lionel Messi preferred to focus on winning trophies rather than attempting to better the 73 goals he scored for Barcelona last season, when he spoke at a news conference on Wednesday.
The world player of the year rattled in an unprecedented tally in all competitions in the last campaign, helping Pep Guardiola end his four-year tenure as coach with another four trophies to add to the 10 he had already won.
"I'm not looking to beat my tally of goals, that is not my objective," Messi said.
"I want to try and develop as a player and to give more to the team. I hope I still have margin to continue improving. My objective is to win more titles."
Real Madrid and Chelsea denied Barca the major prizes last year, Jose Mourinho's side winning La Liga and Chelsea knocking them out of the Champions League in the semi-finals on their way to a final victory over Bayern Munich.
"I hope we can get back to winning everything again," he added.
"We know it is very difficult to do, but I am still hurting from losing the semi-final against Chelsea with the penalty I missed, and La Liga with the defeat to Madrid at the Nou Camp."
Guardiola's number two over the last four years, Tito Vilanova, has stepped up to take the reins this season and Messi gave him his backing, having already worked with him in the club's youth academy a decade ago.
"Tito helped me improve a great deal when I was younger," he said. "I never imagined I would run into him again in the first division, but I am very pleased to have him here.
"The squad is very tight here and everyone knows what they need to do."

Super Cup 'Clasico' changed due to awards

Barcelona SuperCup2
The second leg of the Spanish Super Cup between Real Madrid and Barcelona has been brought forward a day as 11 of the potential participants are up for Europe's player of the year award on August 30.
"UEFA have asked the Spanish federation (RFEF) to change the date for the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup, from August 30th to the 29th," the RFEF said in a statement on Tuesday.
"So that it does not coincide with the gala put on by European football's governing body in Monaco."
The first leg of the traditional curtain-raiser to the La Liga season, between the King's Cup winners Barca and league champions Real, will take place on August 23 at the Nou Camp and at the Bernabeu the following week.
Real players Xabi Alonso, Iker Casillas, Fabio Coentrao, Mesut Ozil, Pepe, Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the 32 nominees along with Barca's Cesc Fabregas, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and current holder Lionel Messi.

Vilanova keen to put Mourinho poke in the past

Vilanova2862
Barcelona's new coach Tito Vilanova refused to contribute to the controversy over the lifting of Jose Mourinho's and his bans after last year's infamous eye-poke incident as he started work at the Nou Camp on Tuesday.
Pep Guardiola's former assistant, who has since stepped up to the top job, was deliberately poked in the eye by Real Madrid boss Mourinho during a melee on the touchline at the end of last season's Spanish Super Cup between the sides.
"What happened in that game, that is still being talked about a year further on, I am tired of it," Vilanova told a news conference.
The Spanish federation (RFEF) imposed a two-match Super Cup ban on Mourinho, and one on Vilanova for reacting to the aggression by pushing him away.
Last week, newly re-instated federation president Angel Maria Villar lifted the punishments as part of a general amnesty, something he has traditionally done to players and coaches after sealing re-election.
The ruling prompted an angry reaction from Barcelona with club spokesman Toni Freixa saying Mourinho's actions could not be allowed to go unpunished.
"The one-man panel imposed a sanction, the president decided on an amnesty [for us], and I accept it. It has worked this way for many years," Vilanova added.
"The biggest punishment the two of us will have are the images, that people will be able to see for many years."
Vilanova was giving his first news conference since the club returned to start pre-season training on Monday and inevitably he was asked if there was any lingering bad blood between him and the coach of their arch-rivals, the La Liga champions.
"Mourinho has already greeted me at the Bernabeu in the league [since then], and I don't think we have a bad relationship," he said.
Barcelona resume their rivalry with Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup, the traditional curtain-raiser to the new season between the league champions and the King's Cup winners next month.
The first leg is at the Nou Camp on August 23, with the return at the Bernabeu on August 29.

Menezes: Spain have set new benchmark

Menezes Brazil
Spain have surged ahead of Brazil to become the new benchmark for world football, and the only way to make up ground on the world and European champions is to follow their example and adopt a long-term approach, coach Mano Menzes told Reuters in an interview.
Menzes, however, dismissed the idea that the five-times world champions would copy Spain by playing without a recognised striker, pointing out that the number nine shirt was part of Brazilian football culture.
"It's a different type of football, they have worked on it for years and found their way of doing things," Menezes said of Spain. "Before they became successful, they prepared hard and were already winning matches.
"It's obvious that there is a distance between them and us. We have started afresh in Brazil.
"The champions are always a benchmark and Spain are outlining the way football is played in the world. They make the rules today in the way Brazil have done in the past," he added.
"Nobody can take on Spain on equal terms."
Menezes also dismissed suggestions the Spanish passing game had become dull to watch.
"If they can beat everyone playing this way, it's up to the others to find a way of overcoming it," he said
"Lots of teams have played possession-based football in the past, but in the way they do and the way that they keep the ball, nobody has done that."
Brazil have drifted away from their swaggering, attacking style over the last few years, opting for a more physical and direct approach which reached its zenith under Dunga at the last World Cup.
NEW PHILOSOPHY
Brazil's quarter-final exit at the hands of the Netherlands in 2010 prompted a reaction against that type of play and Menezes decided it was time to implement a new philosophy.
"We must not copy Spain, we have to study how to play against them," said Menezes.
One aspect of Spain's game that Brazil would not be copying was the so-called "false number nine" which basically involved playing without a recognised forward.
From the lumbering Serginho Chulapa in 1982 to the clinical brilliance of Ronaldo between 1998 and 2006, the striker has always been key figure for Brazil and Menezes said it would stay that way.
"Our football has always been based on the forwards, and culturally that is the way our fans want to see the team play. I don't see why we should give up on this simply because Spain were successful.
"We have to find a way of winning with forwards."
Although Menezes talks of long-term planning, he faces a race against time with Brazil to host the 2014 World Cup.
He knows the fans will accept nothing less than a sixth world title.
Results and performance so far have been mixed, with a quarter-final exit in the Copa America last year adding to the pressure.
Menezes will also take charge of the Olympic side in London, featuring under-23 teams, and will again be under huge pressure to deliver Brazil's first gold medal.
Vanderley Luxemburgo was fired as both under-23 and senior coach after failure in Sydney and Dunga survived by the skin of his teeth after Brazil failed to bring home the gold in Beijing.
"There is always a pressure for results with Brazil, we can't live under the illusion that we can lose matches and that nothing will happen," said Menezes.
"We cannot build a Brazilian national team by losing".
Players such as Neymar, Alexandre Pato and Thiago Silva make Brazil strong title contenders but Menezes said that past experience showed nothing could be taken for granted.
"We have never won the Olympic Games and if you take a look back and look at the list of players who have taken part in the Olympics, we can see that it's not easy.
"The worst mistake we can make is to think we are favourites before we have played, that's the first step on the way to not winning."
Menezes hoped that playmaker Paulo Henrique Ganso, a hugely promising but injury-prone playmaker of the type which Brazil have struggled to produce, could finally shine at a major event.
"What we want for Ganso, and what he wants as well, is that this period is different from the one we've had in the past," said Menezes.

Martinez dismisses Barcelona transfer talk

Javi Bilbao286
Javi Martinez has ruled out a move to Barcelona after declaring his happiness with life at Athletic Bilbao.
The young Spaniard has been attracting interest from across the continent following a series of impressive performances for the Basque outfit.
Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also believed to be tracking the 23-year-old.
However, Martinez has insisted he is happy at Athletic and is not averse to seeing out his contract at he San Mames.
"I don't see myself playing for Barcelona. I am very happy at Athletic. I have a contract until 2016 and the truth is that I see myself at Athletic [until then]," he told Antena 3.
"I've read a lot of things in the newspapers, but not everything that's being said is true. If we were to believe all the rumours, I'd have signed for seven different teams already."
Martinez has become an integral member of the Athletic starting XI, making 54 appearances as Los Leones secured a top-10 finish in La Liga and navigated their way to the final of both the Europa League and Copa del Rey.

Nilmar set to complete Qatar move

Nilmar Qatar286
Brazilian forward Nilmar is set to sign for Qatari outfit Al Rayyan, ending his three-year association with Villarreal.
The 27-year-old moved to Spaint in 2009 from Internacional and has been linked with a move away from the club following their relegation to the Segunda Division.
A return to Brazil had been a possibility, but it now appears the front-man will put pen-to-paper with the Qatar giants.
"Nilmar [is set] to complete the negotiations attached to the club Al Rayyan," read a statement on the club’s official website.
Nilmar will team up with compatriot Rodrigo Tabata next year, who arrived from Besiktas in 2011.

Muniain confident of Bielsa stay at Bilbao

Muniain Bilbao286
Athletic Bilbao forward Iker Muniain is confident head coach Marcelo Bielsa will remain at the club.
The Argentine recently offered his resignation at the La Liga outfit after the club refused to stand by him following an altercation with a construction company employee over work that had not been completed at the training ground.
Bielsa, who only signed a one-year contract extension at San Mames, later reversed his decision to leave the club - news that has been welcomed by Muniain.
The 19-year-old quashed further claims that the former Chile head coach was set to depart, telling Europa Press: "It might have been a mess, but everything is back to normal.
"Today, Bielsa is the coach here, and it will stay like that."
Muniain also confirmed he had used the recent break to recuperate from a hectic season with Athletic ahead of the Olympics.
"It was a tough season, but I personally used the break to the fullest to recharge my batteries," he told As.
"There were many games, some of a very high level, with little break in between, but I'll be ready for Spain's opening match against Japan.
"At first glance, people may think it's an easy group, but all the sides present [Japan, Morocco and Honduras] deserve to be there. All three opponents are at a high level, and everyone here has to do their part in these tough games."

Mourinho Super Cup ban for eye poke lifted

Mourinho Eye
A two-match ban given to Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho for poking Barcelona assistant Tito Vilanova in the eye has been lifted as part of a general amnesty, the Spanish football federation (RFEF) said on Tuesday.
The decision, announced at the RFEF's general assembly in Madrid, raises the prospect of a clash between the federation and Barca, whose president Sandro Rosell said last month he would not allow Mourinho's aggression to go unpunished.
The volatile Portuguese was sanctioned after attacking Vilanova, who has since taken over as first-team coach from Pep Guardiola, from behind during a Super Cup match last season.
The ban, applicable only in the Super Cup, was rescinded by RFEF president Angel Maria Villar, who traditionally exonerates some players and coaches after sealing re-election. He was voted in unopposed for a seventh four-year term in February.
"Match bans up to four games and stadium bans up to two games will not be enforced," the RFEF ruled, according to a note distributed at the assembly.
The ruling meant Vilanova's one-match ban for reacting to Mourinho's aggression was also lifted.
Both can take their place on the bench when La Liga champions Real and King's Cup winners Barca meet next month in the 2012 Super Cup, the two-legged curtain-raiser to the season.
Rosell suggested last month the club would challenge any decision to exonerate Mourinho.
"We do not accept that an aggression towards our coach is not punished," Rosell said.
"If this happens, we will speak to the appropriate party, we will not let it go unpunished."

La Liga 'Clasicos' set for October and March

Messi Ronaldo71
Real Madrid and Barcelona will meet in the opening La Liga "Clasico" of the season on the weekend of October 6/7 at Barca's Camp Nou stadium, according to the draw held at the Spanish football federation (RFEF) headquarters in Madrid on Tuesday.
Champions Real will then host Barca, who finished second last season, on the weekend of March 2/3, the RFEF said.
The great rivals also meet over two legs next month in the Spanish Super Cup, the traditional season opener that pits the league champions (Real) against the King's Cup winners (Barca).
The first leg will be played at the Nou Camp on August 23, with the return at the Bernabeu on August 30, the RFEF said.
Real begin the defence of their La Liga title at home to Valencia, third last term, on the weekend of August 18/19, while Barca are at home to Real Sociedad.
"It's going to be a tough season, like the last one, and we will try to respond to expectations with the support of our fans," Real director Emilio Butragueno said during the draw.
Jose Mourinho's Real set a points record of 100 in winning the title for the first time in four years last season, when they ended Barca's three-year reign as champions.

Mali midfielder Keita to leave Barcelona

Keita Barcelona2
Mali midfielder Seydou Keita is leaving Barcelona following a four-year spell at the Nou Camp during which the Catalans won 14 trophies.
"Seydou Keita has announced tonight he will not continue with the club next season," Barca said on their website.
"Barcelona thanks Seydou Keita for his contribution over the past few years and wishes him more professional and personal success in the future."
Keita, 32, joined from Sevilla at the same time as Pep Guardiola took over as coach.
He had a close relationship with Guardiola and his exit is likely to be linked to the former Spain and Barca midfielder's decision to quit at the end of last season.
Guardiola used Keita almost exclusively as a substitute and the player helped Barca win three Spanish leagues, two Champions Leagues and two King's Cups.
Spanish media reported the midfielder had a clause in his contract, which runs until 2014, that allowed him to leave on a free transfer if he did not start at least half of last season's games.

Bielsa future at Athletic Bilbao in doubt

Bielsa Bilbao1
Marcelo Bielsa's future as Athletic Bilbao coach remained unclear after an emergency board meeting at the La Liga club on Friday following a public disagreement over work being done at the training ground.
President Josu Urrutia and Bielsa left the meeting without speaking to reporters, failing to dampen Spanish media speculation that the eccentric and outspoken Argentine was considering his position.
The problem blew up at the beginning of the week when the team returned to start pre-season training after the holidays, and Bielsa lost his temper with contractors carrying out renovation work at the Lezama training facilities.
The Argentine gave a lengthy news conference on Thursday when he apologised for the way in which he had acted, but insisted the work was shoddy and behind schedule and that he was only defending the club's interests.
He accused the contractors of "ripping-off, robbing, and deceiving" the club, but Bilbao's board responded on Friday with a strongly-worded statement on their website saying they completely disagreed with their coach on all counts.
"[The club] apologise publicly for the damage that has been done to the construction company and their workers by an employee of Athletic Bilbao," the Basque side said.
The former Argentina and Chile boss joined Bilbao at the beginning of last season guiding them to the finals of the Europa League and King's Cup, only to lose both to Atletico Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

Wedding bells to turn Iniesta's legs to jelly

Iniesta Dejected
Walking down the aisle to get married this weekend will be much more nerve-racking than playing in Euro 2012, said Spain's Andres Iniesta, who was voted the best player of the tournament for his cool, commanding performances.
"It will be a special and different day," the Barcelona midfielder told a news conference on Wednesday.
"I am sure it will make me nervous, much more than being on the field of play."
The 28-year-old, who calmly slotted away a spot-kick in the semi-final penalty shootout against Portugal, helped world champions Spain to get a second successive European championship triumph with a 4-0 final victory over Italy on Sunday.
"I am pleased for the personal recognition," he said in reference to UEFA's best-player award. "But one player does not represent a championship. My colleagues deserve it as much as I do."
